Hi Reader,

Welcome to the first edition of this monthly dispatch on how to sweeten our lives through the lens & tools of Yoga. 🌺

I've been meaning to start this for a while but kept putting it off.
I made up lots of excellent excuses not to...

The truth is I was (still am) chicken about it. Like anything new, it's uncomfortable! Also I had to get off my ass. πŸ™‡πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

✨YOGIC TOOLBOX ✨

Luckily, Yoga has lots of tricks to cut through the doubt. Here are ideas to give you a boost of energy & courage for your next move:

β€‹πŸ•΅πŸ»β€β™€οΈ Locate the resistance. Our emotions live in our body, yet we constantly reside in our heads. Instead of letting your mind say what you can't do, drop in the felt sensations. Where are you stuck?

🦁 Breathe it out. Our exhalation allows us to release pent up tension and clear out blocks. You might want to sigh out loudly or even roar... The Lion Breath pranayama technique of exhaling with your tongue out is a great one to sum up your courage. It also looks so ridiculous that you can't possibly take yourself too seriously.

πŸ’ Open up to the possibility. Great asanas (poses) for this are Backbends. They teach us to be ok with exposing our heart and becoming vulnerable, which might be what we fear most. (Did you know "courage" comes from the Latin β€œcor” which means β€œheart"?)

πŸ‘†πŸΌ In this video I teach how to get into Dhanurasana or Bow pose. I explain 3 principles of alignment to help improve your backbends and offer different ways to explore the pose. Give it a go ;)

πŸŒ™ Set your resolve. Research in neuroplasticity is just starting to uncover our ability to rewire our brains. Yogis seem to have intuited this a while back because they're aaaaall about setting intentions.

Before bed, imagine yourself doing the thing you've been resisting. Put words on it, present tense (ie: "I exercise every day" or "I am a writer") and just let the idea float away while you fall asleep. While the world might not conspire to make your vision true (sorry), just dropping the idea into your brain will likely make it easier to do - because often it just us standing in our own way, not the universe.

By the way, this technique has helped me do hard things like quitting smoking or getting up before dawn (I know the worst!)
